Topic Clusters and Semantic SEO

Last Updated:July 3, 2021

Sometimes this is called a hub and spoke content model .

When you create a WordPress website for a Service business like “HVAC” do not put all services on a single page. Because that page can confuse the users as well as the Search Engine.

You create clusters related to one key topic. For example you can select a key topic as  “WordPress Security”.

Now you create the pillar post for “WordPress security”

Then you create the sub pages which can be linked to pillar pages.

If you can organize your structure like above you can create the content for the pillar post and sub pages.

Now we will see how to create topic cluster

Our target is to create the most information rich page for WordPress security.

In this example, search intent type is informational

Advantages of creating content clusters

  • Ability to rank for competitive keyword because you can have knowledge depth on topics
  • Improve the UX and user engagement
  • Create semantic relationship between pages
  • So your entire cluster can keep focus on one topic

For an example I have a pillar post called “WordPress maintenance tasks”. In this post, I can include the list of task which you should do regularly on your WordPress

However, I can not write an in depth guide for each and every task listed in the post. So I can create separate subpages and put links to the pillar posts. So a user who are interested in WordPress maintenance can read the entire cluster and acquire a good knowledge about the website maintenance of a WordPress driven site.

If you offer WordPress support and maintenance service you can show the lead magnet within this cluster.
